Lake Home Living

Design Tips for the Perfect Lake Life Getaway

By Megan Johansson

Summer days on the lake are about as Minnesota as it gets. And really, when you think about just how many months we’re all stuck inside during the rest of the year, it makes perfect sense.

Lake life here in the Midwest isn’t just a once in a while thing or a quick weekend vacation – it’s part of the full experience. So, whether your lake getaway is your primary residence or your summer cabin, why not make it feel like the ultimate escape?

We’re currently doing several lake homes for our clients and have loved every second. Keep your eyes peeled for pics to come as the projects wrap up!

Until then, read on for our design tips on transforming your space into the relaxation zone of your dreams (and while you’re at it, go ahead and pour yourself another glass of that summer shandy – you deserve it).

Outdoor Entertaining

The crème de la crème and the star of the show is the lake. Who doesn’t dream all winter long of hopping in the pontoon and tooling across the water? Who doesn’t want to get in a swimsuit the second they pull up to the house? A lake home isn’t the same without all the fun to be had on the boat, so don’t forget to keep your lakefront design in mind. From Adirondack chairs to fire pits, you’ll want your outdoor space to be a total haven for every kind of activity – whether adventurous or relaxing.

Color Inspiration

Be sure to incorporate lakeside inspiration in your home with pops of blues, bold and whimsical patterns, and crisp clean whites. Layer it up, too, with a variety of throw pillows and shelves that showcase your favorite keepsakes alongside book collections and family frames. Keeping everything simple and chic will ensure your rooms don’t feel too kitschy or theme-heavy, but instead feel open and inviting.

Subtle Lake Décor Pops

Lake home design can go over the top if you’re not careful, and it’s important to remember that having a “lake” sign on every surface isn’t a necessity. Instead, keep the majority of your décor more classic and visually simple, then add in a few well-styled beach accents to top it off. If you use them sparingly and with purpose – for instance, a few boat paddles hung on the wall, boat cleats used as mudroom hooks, or a rope towel bar – it can really make your space pop.

Guest Bunks

A great way to make the most out of your space is to convert a bedroom into a bunk room. Great for kids, but also ideal for adult visitors, the bunk room idea is perfect for a lake home and allows you to host as many people as you’ve got room for! Design it with adults in mind – think calm neutrals with small pops of color – and we promise it’ll be a total hit.

Mudroom Essentials

Finally, you don’t want to forget about the mudroom – it’s an essential part of any home, but especially your lake home. The traffic and out of the water means you can pretty much guarantee there’ll be wet drips all around your house in about three seconds. But if you style your mudroom with convenient hooks for wet towels and outdoor gear, and you make sure it’s stocked with plenty of extra towels, your clean up needs will be next to nothing in the rest of the house. It’s the perfect dry-off zone (and it can look pretty good, too, don’t you think?).
